The Sensoji Temple, also known as the Asakusa Kannon Temple, is a Buddhist Temple. Before World War 2 is was associated with the Buddhism "Tendai" Sect but after the war, it became independent.  It is Tokyo's oldest temple, founded in 645, and one of the most significant Buddhist Temple's in Japan. Tokugawa Ieyasu designated Sensoji as the "Tutelary Temple" of the Tokugawa Clan. The current temple is a reconstruction as the original was destroyed during World War 2. The reconstructed temple was rebuilt as a "Symbol of Rebirth and Peace" to the Japanese people.
